All Eyes On Us

thank you so much to NetGalley for providing me with an ebook copy of All Eyes on Us. this does not affect my review or rating.

Pretty Little Liars meets People Like Us in this taut, tense thriller about two teens who find their paths intertwined when an anonymous texter threatens to spill their secrets and uproot their lives.

PRIVATE NUMBER: Wouldn’t you look better without a cheater on your arm?
AMANDA: Who is this?

The daughter of small town social climbers, Amanda Kelly is deeply invested in her boyfriend, real estate heir Carter Shaw. He’s kind, ambitious, the town golden boy—but he’s far from perfect. Because behind Amanda’s back, Carter is also dating Rosalie.

PRIVATE NUMBER: I’m watching you, Sweetheart.
ROSALIE: Who IS this?

Rosalie Bell is fighting to remain true to herself and her girlfriend—while concealing her identity from her Christian fundamentalist parents. After years spent in and out of conversion “therapy,” her own safety is her top priority. But maintaining a fake, straight relationship is killing her from the inside.

When an anonymous texter ropes Amanda and Rosalie into a bid to take Carter down, the girls become collateral damage—and unlikely allies in a fight to unmask their stalker before Private uproots their lives.

PRIVATE NUMBER: You shouldn’t have ignored me. Now look what you made me do…

All Eyes On Us is a book that intrigued me from the moment i read the blurb. i’m always a slut for high society, high drama teen/ya fics!

this book didn’t exactly disappoint: it really was dramatic, sprinkled with rich people problems.

oh, the perks that come with being filthy, filthy rich.

here’s the lowdown:
– amanda, aka the queen b, and her perfect boyfriend, carter. they’re the golden couple, the ‘it’ couple. you want to be them. you want to be around them. hell, you just want to breathe within a one mile radius of them.
– carter is cheating on amanda with rosalie. shock !! horror !! *gasp*
but (and here’s the exciting bit !!) rosalie is just using carter because she’s *dun, dun, duuuuuunnnn* gay and (this bit is awful) having to pretend that the conversion therapy worked.
(got a secret, can you keep it? . . .

she’s got a girlfriend !! super awesome or what ???

better lock it in your pocket, swear this one you’ll save)

did you see what i did there?

the issue is, though, someone knows. someone knows everything. and now, just like in PLL, the girls are getting texts from an anonymous person. yikes.

first of all, the threats weren’t uber scary. second of all, it could’ve dived a little deeper into the big, terrifying, anon-person-threatening-us, because it just felt too childish and not . . . dark enough, i guess. or maybe that’s just me. i like it when shit gets super scary, super terrifying, super dark, because it just a) spices things up and b) it makes everything more fun and scary. and exciting.

that whole side of this book could’ve been twistier and more suspenseful, instead of lightly glossed over. we should’ve seen more vindictive characters, more bitchy comments, more pettiness, more of everything that shows the cruel side of humans and how far people can go to mess with you.

but there just wasn’t enough of that.

on the other hand, there are darker themes at play within ALL EYES ON US. these revolve around religion, sexuality, emotional abuse, addictions and stalking. these can be potentially triggering for some, particularly rosalie’s situation. her family is awful.

there is truly no other goddamn word for it. they’re just shitty people, who torture her. being a parent means unconditional love and support, no matter what, no matter who your child loves. why have a child if you can’t do that ? if your love has limits and you’re so fucking ashamed of your own BABY, your own flesh and blood, for loving someone the same sex as them ? regardless of what religious scriptures say.

also god. how can god be the most loving or forgiving, yet condemn someone he created to hell just because they’re, oh i don’t know, gay ??????? make it make sense pls. i am tiyad.

and what makes this so much worse, is that people like rosalie’s parents exist. people like that hurt their own, just because they don’t have the correct moral compass to realise that being human means loving someone, instead of following maybe an outdated book, written hundreds and thousands of years ago ?

(not shitting on anyone’s beliefs here, i’m all for believing in your religion. but when that belief hurts other people, that’s where i draw the line. believe in god, yes, but don’t be hurting other people and justifying it in the name of god.) which is exactly what rosalie’s shitty shitty goddamn awful parents do.

this book is one that, despite being subpar with its mystery and threatening texts, spoke to me and made me get just a tad teary.

i hope this book teaches girls that they can take charge of their own lives and future and destinies

even if the weight of their family’s and community’s pressure settles over them. because at the end of the day, life will not stop or wait.

at the end of the day, it is your life and your choices. it is so much easier said than done, trust me i know.

but one day it will end up being too late and you’ll be living a life full of regret, thinking ‘what if . . .‘ — don’t let that happen.

and whoever is in a similar situation to rosalie, pls try to seek help however you can. and i am always here if you need someone to talk to. always. and you are not alone. you are not unloved. you are fucking amazing, i hope you know that.

and as for this book, it’s probably like a 3.75 out of 5 stars for me, as the thriller/mystery aspect of it just didn’t cut it for me.

it’s a shame, though. what did you think of ALL EYES ON US ? have you read it ? is it on your TBR ?

Sumaiya, x
